HVAC Pressure Testing Ireland: How Ductwork Airtightness Can Affect HVAC Energy Efficiency in 2026

If your HVAC system is working harder than it should, the problem may be hiding inside your ductwork.

Small gaps, loose joints, and damaged sections can allow conditioned air to escape before it reaches the rooms that need it. That means your system may use more energy while delivering less effective airflow.

This is where HVAC Pressure Testing Ireland can make a real difference.

Pressure testing helps assess whether ductwork is meeting the required airtightness and pressure standards. At Total Air Solutions, this service sits alongside ventilation cleaning, Aeroseal duct sealing, fire damper testing and AI-powered duct monitoring.

And in 2026, energy performance is becoming an even bigger consideration for Irish building owners.

Why ductwork airtightness matters

Think of your ductwork as the road your conditioned air travels along.

If that road has leaks, some of the air never reaches its destination.

Leaks can occur around flanged connections, slip joints, seams, and fixings. Damage during transport, installation problems and on-site adjustments can also contribute to leakage. Total Air Solutions notes that individual leaks can be difficult to locate because many small leaks can combine into a much larger overall loss.

The result can be poor airflow, temperature-control problems, and increased demand on HVAC equipment.

That doesn't mean every energy problem comes from duct leakage. Building fabric, controls, equipment efficiency and operating practices also matter.

However, ductwork is an important part of the overall system.

SEAI's current guidance for commercial building decarbonisation specifically recommends assessing heating and cooling systems, ventilation efficiency, building airtightness and other building components when planning energy improvements.

What changed in Ireland in 2026?

There is a timely reason to look more closely at building energy performance.

From 24 May 2026, Ireland introduced a simplified BER scale for non-residential buildings. The revised scale runs from A to G, with a new A0 category for zero-emission buildings with very high energy performance and no fossil-fuel use.

The change follows the EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.

The updated non-domestic BER certificate also provides additional information about energy use, renewable energy contribution, global warming potential, and recommended energy improvements.

Your BER does not simply depend on whether your ducts have passed a pressure test. However, the wider focus on building energy performance makes HVAC efficiency worth examining.

That makes HVAC Pressure Testing Ireland a useful part of a broader maintenance and energy-efficiency conversation.

Its service coverage includes Antrim, Armagh, Carlow, Cavan, Clare, Connacht, Cork, Derry, Donegal, Down, Dublin, Fermanagh, Galway, Ireland, Kerry, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Leitrim, Leinster, Limerick, Longford, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Monaghan, Munster, Offaly, Roscommon, Sligo, Tipperary, Tyrone, Ulster, Waterford, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow.

How pressure testing can identify problems

A pressure test gives you useful information about how your ductwork performs under controlled conditions.

Instead of guessing where energy or airflow problems might be coming from, testing can help establish whether the duct system is sufficiently airtight.

This can be especially useful when you're dealing with:

Uneven temperatures between rooms
Unexpectedly weak airflow
HVAC equipment working harder than expected
Persistent comfort complaints
Suspected duct leakage
New ventilation installations
HVAC upgrades or refurbishment projects
Performance issues in larger commercial buildings

For new projects, testing can also provide useful evidence during installation and commissioning.

NSAI's ventilation validation scheme focuses on systems being properly installed, balanced and commissioned. Its guidance also refers to the requirements of Technical Guidance Document F for ventilation.

SEAI's technical guidance similarly stresses that upgraded ventilation systems should be commissioned, tested and adjusted to achieve appropriate airflow and balancing.

Testing is only part of the solution

Finding leakage is useful. Fixing it is where the practical benefit can begin.

Total Air Solutions offers Aeroseal, a duct-sealing technology designed to seal leaks from inside existing duct systems. The company explains that Aeroseal can address small and difficult-to-access leaks that may otherwise be challenging to locate and seal manually.

The company also states that Aeroseal can help improve duct airtightness and reduce energy waste associated with leaking ductwork.

This creates a straightforward approach:

Assess → Test → Identify leakage → Seal where appropriate → Monitor performance.

That approach can be particularly helpful when access to existing ductwork is limited.

Don't forget ventilation performance

Airtight ductwork isn't the same thing as good ventilation.

Your system still needs to deliver the right amount of air to the right places. That's why testing should sit within a wider approach to HVAC maintenance and commissioning.

NSAI notes that effective ventilation helps control moisture and harmful pollutants, while ventilation systems need proper maintenance and competent adjustment.

Total Air Solutions can support this wider approach through ventilation system cleaning, pressure testing, Aeroseal, fire damper testing, and its AI-powered Duct Monitor. The Duct Monitor is designed to provide real-time HVAC monitoring and help identify developing issues.

So, if you're investigating poor HVAC performance, don't look at energy consumption alone.

Look at the whole air system.

Where can you arrange HVAC pressure testing?

Total Air Solutions provides HVAC and ductwork services across Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The same nationwide coverage extends across Antrim, Armagh, Carlow, Cavan, Clare, Connacht, Cork, Derry, Donegal, Down, Dublin, Fermanagh, Galway, Ireland, Kerry, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Leitrim, Leinster, Limerick, Longford, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Monaghan, Munster, Offaly, Roscommon, Sligo, Tipperary, Tyrone, Ulster, Waterford, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow.

Total Air Solutions says it serves residential, commercial and industrial clients nationwide, with its main base in Roo East, Ardnacrusha, Co. Clare.

When should you consider pressure testing?

There isn't one situation that applies to every building.

However, testing is worth considering when you're installing new ductwork, investigating unexplained airflow problems, refurbishing an HVAC system, or looking for potential sources of energy loss.

It can also be useful before and after remedial work.

For example, if testing identifies leakage and Aeroseal is then used to seal the ductwork, further assessment can help you understand the result.

This evidence-led approach is especially useful for facility managers and building owners who need to make informed maintenance decisions.

FAQs

What is HVAC pressure testing?

HVAC pressure testing assesses how ductwork performs under pressure and helps identify whether the system meets applicable airtightness and pressure requirements.

Can duct leakage increase HVAC energy use?

It can. Leaking ducts can allow conditioned air to escape, potentially making the HVAC system work harder to deliver the required airflow. Total Air Solutions identifies duct leakage as a source of energy waste.

Is HVAC pressure testing required for every building?

Requirements depend on the building, system, project, and applicable standards. Pressure testing should not be confused with whole-building airtightness testing, which is a separate process.

Can leaking ducts be repaired?

Yes, depending on the system and the nature of the leakage. Total Air Solutions offers Aeroseal for sealing existing duct systems from the inside.

Does pressure testing improve a building's BER?

A pressure test does not automatically improve a BER. Building energy ratings consider wider factors. However, identifying and addressing HVAC inefficiencies can form part of a broader energy-performance improvement programme. Ireland's 2026 BER changes place renewed attention on building energy performance.
